What did you like about this project? I really liked being able to kind of choose what I wanted to study about Guatemala. This was super fun because it was information that I wanted to learn about, which ultimately lead to more motivation to create beautiful work on my end. I am very proud of my slide show and found it super fun to make it pleasing to the eye. I also enjoyed making the script and being able to practice speaking out in front of people. I have found that this is a weakness in my spanish skills and I lack confidence or proper ways to pronounce things, but through the class presentations I think that I jumped back into speaking which has helped me make some more tangible goals moving forward. What were some of the most interesting discoveries you made while working on this project? I found that the Quetzal is a very important part of Guatemalan culture and is on their flag, their money is named after it, and Mayan people see it as a symbol of wealth. I found this interesting because I had never heard of this bird before and it is such a big part of people’s culture. (They are also very cute). What was the most difficult part? Going back to the actual presentation part, as much as I liked speaking out in front of people, I found that this was very challenging for me. I have never really been good at speaking in spanish and I can see that I really need to work at that if I want to see more improvement. I feel like I can do a really good job writing things down, but when it comes to speaking them out, I feel like I lose that knowledge. What would you like to learn more about? I would love to learn more about the history of Guatemala. After reading about their national hero going to battle, I would love to hear more about the history and how the country came to be. Another thing that I am interested in is the political system. I know that they just elected a new president, who will be in office in January, but I would love to see how it compares to the United States. What would you suggest to do differently next time? Next time, I think that the refining as a group doing the same topic should have a specific protocol. I know that this year there wasn’t very much time and so it didn’t happen like that but that might be a good idea for checking factual accuracy and just verbal practice with your group.
