Project description: During this project, we created a scientific question and experiments to test our hypothesis. Our main focus was winter recreation and survival and my groups question was testing how different materials to see which one would insulate someone the most. To do this we used a thermal camera to collect the surface temperature of our test subject. We used different vocabulary, and used our design thinking to create a well thought out experiment to test. Our group had to go through several different stages of refinement to get out initial question and hypothesis. The roles I played in my group, were group leader and data manager. I did an okay job keeping my group on task, and I really tried hard to make our project work time as well used as possible. For data managing, I re titled all of our pictures and organized them by time and experimental trial.

During this project, we learned physics concepts while constructing fully working rube gold bergs. To start off this project we did labs that tested velocity, acceleration, and other concepts. Then we formed what our rube should do and what step t should accomplish. The requirements for this project were our rube has to work for 20 seconds, it should have at least 12 steps, and it has to work on its own. We calculated six of our steps, which included two simple machines.
Our rubes final step was pouring tea, so we made a two sided rube Goldberg. The first side poured the water, the starting step was a domino zip line, the domino hits a bouncy ball which goes down a ramp and hits a huge bouncy ball that falls into a bucket and weighs the water into the cup. On the second side, it starts with a set of domino which pushes a lever down. On the other side of the lever is a huge weight which falls down a funnel and hits a stick that pushes a rubber band. This triggers a ball to go down a wire ramp and then down a broken CD ramp and hits a tea ball which goes on a slide to the other side. The hands on skills that I learned during this project was refinement and problem solving. I used refinement because our initial idea was sort of far fetched, and so we had to refine as we go. The logistics was off. Going along with this I learned problem solving because some of our ideas just didn't work so we had to solve what we were going to do. One physics concept that really applies to our rube is the force being transferred from object to object. This is important because most of our rube is objects hitting other objects, so this applies to everything. The hardest part if the project were the elastic components in our rube. For some reason everyone of these steps had some type of complication. The first one(that we took out) was hard to trigger because it had to be an upward hook and it was very complicated to trigger it. Our other elastic has the problem with being pushed hard enough. We need to figure it out still. |
